Sad farewells

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Funeral services for County Councillors Barrie Mycock and Peter Beresford who both sadly passed away recently were held on Wednesday 11 May. Although both services were rather different they were equally moving and I hope the families of Barrie and Peter can take some comfort now that their loved ones are at rest.

From the ballot box to Birmingham…

Friday, May 6th, 2011

I have spent this morning at the East Staffordshire election count in Burton, where there was a mixture of joy and disappointment.

There have been no elections to Staffordshire County Council. However all eight districts councils within the county have held elections and there have also been elections in most neighbouring authorities.

The important point for Staffordshire County Council is that whatever the political make-up of our district partners we are totally committed to working with them for the benefit of all Staffordshire people.

We will also continue to work closely with our neighbours. These include Stoke-on-Trent where together we are working hard on the Local Enterprise Partnership on priorities such as promoting our application for an Enterprise Zone.

I would like to congratulate the successful candidates, commiserate with the losers, and thank those who have voted for supporting democracy and local government.

This year I have stood down after many years as a borough councillor to focus completely on the county.

And this afternoon my county council business goes on as normal. I am on my way to Birmingham to meet with representatives of the European Commission and discuss the Regional Growth Fund.

County Councillor Peter Beresford

County Councillor Peter BeresfordReceived the very sad news that County Councillor Peter Beresford passed away after a period of ill health. Peter, who represented Burton Town in East Staffordshire for the past six years, was a dedicated public servant, and was formerly Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.

Although our political views often differed I had a great deal of respect and affection for Peter. He was similarly well liked and admired by his colleagues across the council and we are all saddened by his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
