Making a difference for local people

Lord Heseltine visits Staffordshire

This is me (on the right) with Lord Heseltine and Catherine Raines (Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Place)

In recent weeks I and a number of other senior officers and members have been putting a lot of personal time and energy into meeting with some of the key movers and shakers in Government.  You will have noticed no doubt that we have had visits to Staffordshire from Lord Heseltine and business & enterprise minister Mark Prisk MP.  More recently we have been talking to top DCLG civil servants about how we can bring more investment into the county.

Reflecting on these meetings I have to constantly remind myself why it is important to do this kind of work – and how this effort fits with the great work you are doing to deliver better outcomes for the people of Staffordshire.

The two sides of our job go hand in hand.

These meetings with national leaders are about getting understanding of and support for the needs of Staffordshire, particularly for our work to create jobs and growth across the county. Local people tell us that having a good job and enough money to support their family is their number one priority.

A growing economy and a good quality of life also provide a positive and supportive context for our work to deliver services that people need and in dealing with the inevitable impact of reductions in public spending.

This is what gets me out of bed every morning – and I know it motivates many of you too:  the chance to make a significant and sustainable difference to local people’s lives.

I don’t have to tell you that we are changing fast as an organisation to meet the new demands on us, but that should not stop us from occasionally taking a step back to appreciate and celebrate the work that we do and the lives it changes for the better.

Back to the future

Red future sign in a fieldWe have all been hugely busy over the last months and I am conscious that I haven’t been blogging as much as before.  But there is so much going on that I am back on the blog to keep you in touch with our plans and progress.  And it’s also important that you have a chance to have your say and comment on the issues I raise, or anything else you think I should know about.
